Poha is a light, fluffy, and comforting Indian breakfast dish made using flattened rice (also called chivda). It’s a favorite in many Indian homes, especially in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. This recipe is very easy to prepare and instant to have at any meal, whether it’s your function, breakfast, or snack, this poha recipe will fill your stomach with love at any time in no time.
Ingredients
- Poha (flattened rice)
- Onion
- Green chili
- Mustard seeds
- Curry leaves
- Turmeric powder
- Salt
- Sugar
- Oil
- Lemon juice
- Fresh coriander
- Roasted peanuts
Simple Steps to Follow
- Rinse poha in a strainer under running water. And let it sit for 5-6 minutes to make it soften.
- Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add curry leaves, chopped green chili, and chopped onions, and mix them well on a slow flame until they get soft and brownish.
- Add turmeric powder and sauté for a few seconds.
- Add soaked poha and salt and mix them well (add sugar if you like, or unless you can also have poha with only salt, but sugar adds a bit more texture to your recipe).
- Mix it well and now Cover and steam on low heat for 2–3 minutes.
- Turn off the flame. You can add lemon juice if you would like to have a tangy flavor in your poha
- Garnish with chopped coriander and peanuts (if using). Serve hot.
Note
- You can extra more onions than it will become “kanda poha”.
- If you add chivda to your cooked poha, then it will be “chivda poha”.
- And if you add some extra veggies for more nutritional value, then it will be like “vegetable poha”.
