Upma Recipe – Quick & Healthy Breakfast Recipe

Upma is a quick and healthy south indian region breakfast that is made with (rava or suji), mixed with some spices and veggies to add nutrition and taste to it. This easy to make breafast is the best option for busy morning persons.

Ingredients

  • Rava / Suji (semolina) 
  • Oil or ghee 
  • Mustard seeds 
  • Cumin seeds
  • Urad dal (optional) 
  • Chana dal (optional)
  • Curry leaves 
  • Green chili 
  • Ginger 
  • Onion 
  • Mixed veggies 
  • Salt 
  • Water
  • Coriander leaves 
  • Lemon juice

Steps

  1. In a pan, take ½ cup rava and roast it on medium heat for 4–5 minutes until it turns slightly golden. 
  2. In a kadai or pan, heat 1.5 tbsp oil or ghee. Add mustard seeds and let them cook. Add cumin (if using), urad dal, chana dal, curry leaves, chopped green chili, and ginger, and Sauté them for a few seconds.
  3. Now add chopped onions and sauté until they turn soft and golden. Now add all the vegetables and sauté for a minute.
  4. Pour 1½ to 2 cups of water and add salt. Let them boil for some time.
  5. Once the water is boiled so then reduce the flame to a slow setting. Slowly add the roasted rava while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
  6. Cover with the lid and cook for 3–4 minutes on low heat until the water is absorbed and the upma becomes soft.
  7. Turn off the heat. Add chopped coriander and lemon juice for more taste. Mix them well and now serve it hot!
